‘City Ground, Oh mist rolling in from the Trent,
My desire is always to be here, Oh City Ground’
The Mist Rollin’ in from the Trent
In consultation with local Nottingham dwellers one of the top 3 sounds of Nottingham was the adopted and adapted Nottingham Forest Football team anthem of ‘Mull of Kintyre’, originally made famous by Paul McCartney & the Wings in 1977, a year when Nottingham Forest won the First Division. Resonating from the Southbank of the River Trent the anthem is sung at the start of every home game at the City Ground.
I got the privilege to attend the final home game of the season against Bolton Wanderers and was granted a press pass. The Club allowed me access to be pitch side in front of the Home fans with my entire recording rig ready to capture the pre-match chorus of ‘Mull of Kintyre’. This capture was possibly the most nerve racking capture I have ever approached as I only had one chance to record this, and I would be standing in front of thousands of people.
The arrangement of the piece features banks of drowns from the different captures that I made on the day. I tried to give the layers a mist like energy, swelling and pulsating in and out of one another. There is nothing quite like the sound of thousands of people all singing the same song with so much passion. The football pitch is one of the greatest locations for this experience. I ended the composition with a raw, unprocessed chorus of the song, and even after hearing it so many times it still gives me the shivers.
