about

‘The ability to hear and interpret what we hear is primal. Like most creatures in the animal kingdom, our species has depended on hearing as a key to survival’

From a young age I have been drawn to listening deeply to the world around me with all other senses closed. This meditative process has helped connect me to deeper sense of self and ground me within the world we live in.

For this body of work, I delved deep into soundscapes exploring and developing my creative practice. I put into practice a range of techniques, technologies and compositional approaches that I had been exploring throughout the journey of my MA studies. The use of the GRM plug-in set (Evolution, Space Grain, Doppler), Soundloom and Granulab feature extensively within the processing of my sounds. I tried many different types of capture from MS stereo recording, Bi-aural recording and the use of contact microphones. Having the time over the course of the two-years study allowed me to refine my creative process.

I pushed the focus on my creative principles driving my portfolio towards a more succinct ending. Thinking deeply about the presentation of the compositions, thinking of purpose and aesthetical qualities for each piece. This process allowed me to form my own ideas on how soundscapes can be presented. I concluded that soundscapes acted Culturally and Historically, Politically and Environmentally, and Spectrally, Spatially and Creativity. Although these areas are in no way concrete and certain works blur boundaries and exist with one, two or even all of these purposes, this identification allowed me to understand my own compositional intentions.

I became consciously aware of what I was doing with my source material and how I was using it in conjunction with other captures and in line with my compositional purpose. This provided me a language towards my creative process.

I formulated a range of words for this methodology:

[Compose] – Form by ordering and arranging
[Transpose] – Cause to exchange places
[Oppose] - Actively resist - move away
[Appose] - Place side-by-side or close to - move closer
[Expose] – Introduce something – make visible
[Impose] – Force upon
