‘Language brings one into consciousness while deflating individuality by forcing it into a network, by making the “song of myself” accountable on the pages of social text’
My Home is in Nottingham
In May 2019, I was commissioned to compose a soundscape piece for the Wigflex City Arts Festival in Nottingham, funded by the Arts Council. It was ‘My Home is in Nottingham’ that inspired my creative portfolio. The piece showed me the potential behind a body of work focused solely on Nottingham. In previous work I had traveled far and wide to find interesting captures, but this piece provided a passion and story to be told directly from my daily environment.
I opened up a chat forum on social media to consult with other local Nottingham dwellers on what sounds, historical events and places, ‘sonically’ meant something to them. I was overwhelmed by the responses and from this ‘Nottingham: The Queen of the Midlands’ was born.
